MOONLIGHTING WITHOUT A LIGHT
In the corner of the room, we see her. She’s always who she is. She’s elegant. She’s class. She just came off stage. Everyone always notices her. The first thing she needs to see is her live performance streams. Afterall, metrics count. She scrolls through Instagram, Facebook and her private subscriptions.
DMs are limitless.
Story likes are innumerable.
Subscription requests are unending.
“Look at how many followers…”
She’s come to the corner of the lounge. She regularly performs here. It’s a new place off the strip. A new place in a brand-new casino. Well new is like 4 years. Legacy places like the MGM, Caesar’s Palace and Flamingo’s definitely make this fountain feel like it just started gushing water.
The fountain blue is the new kid on the block.
Our lady is the central star in a set which rotates three singers. She’s the lead and the other two give her a much needed break. This is her makeshift VIP section Saturday through Thursday. Friday is her only day off but she’s here tonight.
Special event. Some guy comes here regularly. The owner wants to honor him with a special performance.
I guess he feels she’s that good.
The followers on IG seem to think so.
From the corner of her eye a figure moves. She glances up. She sees a man pass by.
He heard her as she was talking about her followers. He didn’t do it on purpose but can’t help but overhear. The corner is always a quiet spot to be. There’s a simple elegance to an upscale place like No Where Lounge. It’s filled with the 1950s style bands, swing dancing classics and the BB King blues. The stage can be quite loud, but this one corner gets quiet. That’s why people don’t really congregate here. The dance floor is not surprisingly busy. Seems like Generation Alpha started to appreciate dancing again.
“I wonder how many would follow you to the end.”
Our elegant singer shoots a glance up. Her hair is red. Lipstick the same. She’s easily a size four in the waist, enhancements above and lips which everyone does fillers for. She’s stunning. At least, that’s what the comments say.
“Excuse me?”
He must not know who she is. The man tilts his top hat. He looks straight out of a 1960’s rat pack picture. Classy tuxedo, gangster style Panama made fedora, and an imposing physique which states all the manliness it needs to.
“My name is Hugh. Hugh Humble.”
The woman looks at him. Bats her eyes.
“Who’s going to follow me to the end? You’re not a creep, right?”
Hugh smiles. The grin is more of a smirk than a hint of amusement.
“Why are you smiling? It’s not funny.”
Hugh looks cool. Obviously not flustered.
“I overhead you have followers. I guess I wondered who really cares about you. Sounds like nobody.”
He motions by and sits adjacent to her. He pulls out a book. The book is entitled “Book of Five Rings” by Myomato Musashi.
“What do you know about people caring about me? You get all that from looking at me for 5 seconds and hearing me say a few words? You’re pretty full of yourself.”
Hugh calmly cracks open the book. He moves slowly to his mark.
“I really like reading in here.”
Confusion. Who is this guy? Our singer wonders.
“It’s a good spot. This place. Every Friday. I like it. Never saw you here before. You’re not good enough to sing here on Fridays?”
Our fiery temptress seems to turn up her heat. She’s about to speak. Hugh raises his hand.
“Hold on…”
Hugh finds his place.
“Okay. I’m sure you’re good. They don’t just let anyone in here.”
Hugh softly smiles.
“So, you don’t want to know my name? Rude.”
Hugh puts his book down. He looks up.
“I didn’t say that. Do you always assume? I choose words carefully.”
Our temptress has locked eyes. They are on Hugh.
“If I could guess I would say…”
“My name is Priscilla. Priscilla Pride. You know like…”
Hugh tilts his head to the side. He leans back and waives to the hostess. She comes over.
“Hugh so nice to see you! In your usual spot! Do you want an old fashion?”
Hugh smiles, “Absolutely. Thanks Doll.”
Doll runs out of the corner lounge and winks.
“You’re a regular? I thought you came here to be by me.”
Hugh smiles, “No I came here because I sit here every Friday night. I read to this chaos. I like it. It’s nice. It’s just quiet in the corner away from the band where the music plays but it doesn’t overpower my train of thought.”
Priscilla looks at him a little embarrassed.
“Look Miss Pride? Or is it Misses…”
“No, I’m single. I don’t have a boyfriend or anything.”
“Right. No boyfriend Pride. Got it…”
Priscilla looks flustered.
“…I made the comment because of your tone. Not because of what you said. It didn’t seem like you were proud of the followers. That’s all.”
Priscilla looks curiously.
“What do you mean?”
The old fashion arrives. Just in time for Hugh to take a sip.
“I mean…you seem like the type to have a lot of attention. I just don’t get the vibe you have any committed focus. That’s what your tone sounds like. But hey I’m just a guy coming to read in the corner.”
Hugh motions over there.
“The party’s over there. That’s where all the people are.”
Priscilla looks over. Everyone is laughing. Guys are approaching women asking to dance. The married couples are reliving their youth. The band is interacting with the crowd. It’s a grand old scene. Her alternates seem to know everyone by name. Funny she doesn’t know any of these people. How can you have nearly 4 million followers, have everyone come to hear you sing and not know a single regular’s name?
Then the owner comes in and shakes Hugh’s hand.
“Hugh thank you for coming here. Thank you for always gracing us with your presence.”
Hugh smiles.
“I’m just a guy who likes to read here. That’s all.”
The owner shoots back at Hugh.
“You’re the guy that saved my family from bankruptcy. You are not just a guy who likes to read here. You’re my honored guest. Always more important than anyone else. The least I can do is give you a space every Friday, and let you get a drink on me.”
Hugh raises his glass, “Who would have thought you would own an entire casino.”
The owner nods.
“It was a dark time for me back then. You were there for me. I’ll never forget. I have to get back and make sure your commencement speech is prepared properly.”
Hugh sips and smiles.
Priscilla is floored.
It gets her thinking. Attention really is fleeting.
“I guess you’re right…” Priscilla trails off to her IG page. Hugh sees her swipe up again.
“Hey.” Pride looks up. Clearly wanting some validation. “It’s okay to come over here and sit down. You can actually have a genuine conversation with a person. Just because I don’t know who you are doesn’t mean you’re not worth knowing. You never know who you meet sometimes. Every person deserves genuine attention.”
Priscilla smiles. Maybe it’s time to lose the IG followers for one focused person.
