NARRATIVES VERSUS STORIES
The story one hears is different than one lives. Each step in our lives paves a path to eternity. The truth between narrative and reality is found in observation.
In my case I observed guilt. The guilt for misguided loyalty. The guilt for failing to hold those closest accountable. The guilt for failing to verify documentation.
Willful disregard can be the same as knowing.
Much as a wife can fool herself her adulterous husband has an important meeting at 2am; I shared the same willful blindness for my brother.
Accepting responsibility means being honest about my path, my choices and deciding how to find redemption.
THE PATH OF REDEMPTION
Redemption begins inside the mind. It resides inside the heart. A person can travel the wrong way for a long time but can always change their course in an instant.
Simply turn around and stop walking the wrong way.
A life dedicated to preventing exactly what one once perpetuated is noble. Wrongs can be written this way. Wrongs can be made right. Wrongs can be made transformative.
ERRORS IN JUDGMENT
I committed an error of misguided loyalty. Unquestioned loyalty is not loyalty – it is fool hearty. The idea of never doubting is romantic but romance is not what glues marriage together.
Ethics.
Values.
Morals.
These things matter. When one observes a family member compromise these things – one must reassess loyalty. The notion of nobly standing by a misguided family member until the end ends how my story does.
So do not write my story. It is not the story anyone should but none the less it is mine. It is up to me to write the next chapters.
