Most voluntarily surrender control of this one simple power to others because they seek to control the uncontrollable.

PERSONAL ADVERSTY A TEACHER

“Chains abound and wrists shackled I stared out a window being led to another detention center by people who rely upon proven liars, with no evidence, to support their actions. In this moment I decided to will myself to proper perspective, “God what is it that you want me to learn by allowing this to occur?”

THE MAJORITY ARE NEGATIVE

People Victimized Question: Why do these things happen to me? How can someone be treated so unjustly? Why do these people always pursue me when they know the truth?

How Victims Address their Victimizers: “Why are you doing this to me? signals to external forces you agree they control you and you surrender your Will to their will.

Lack of Faith: No situation occurs for no purpose. Take note the design of our universe is perfectly calculated. The earth is precisely the correct distance from the sun for life to occur. The wobble of the planet is exactly the proper degree to have proper variety of seasons. The moon has the exact distance to ensure stability of rotation. Your life is not an accident, some form of random chance nor are the situations in your life occurring for no reason. Have faith your life and all its events are purposeful.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY CONTROL

True Will:

If perception is a discipline of the mind, and action a discipline of the body – than Will is a discipline of the heart. For Will is something we always completely control. Will can occur at any moment, under any circumstance and does not rely upon any external factor to manifest. The mind must be checked constantly to be led back on course. The body can fail through illness. Will can occur within any state of mind and any state of body.

How It Illustrates:

Present Situation - “I am in a completely vegetative state. I cannot move, talk or walk.”

Present Response – “I can Will myself to be aware and conscious. I can meditate.”

What This Response Does:

  • Shows Will can manifest under even the most extreme circumstance. Will does not require any form of action, thought or result to initiate.

  • Shows Will be separate from an action. There is nothing happening physically. Contrary to popular belief, will is not the act of doing something physically.

  • Shows Will is different than thought. Often people think will power is some form of mind state. No self-talk is occurring in this example nor is it a form of imagination.

The Principle of Honing Will

It is important to draw upon Will in small, measurable and controlled manners of discomfort. Will is often called upon in moments of challenge. If you do not do this your will power (measure of Will) can be weak.

How To Hone Will Techniques (Use Them)

  1. Cold Shower. Strengthen Will with a flash of cold water during a shower. You can start in seconds and proceed to minutes. Do small, measured bursts where you are not overwhelmed.

  2. Random Plank. Strengthen Will by getting into a plank position. At some point your body will begin to release lactic acid and tremble as your core struggles to maintain position. Try to last 5 seconds in this position, than 10 seconds up to maybe 30. This is not a workout. This is about introducing a feeling once and knowing you can draw upon Will in a sudden moment of discomfort. Do it randomly not as part of a routine.

  3. Randomly Hold Your Arm at 90 degrees. This is where you hold your hand and arm perfectly at shoulder length. Similar to a plank you will find the same routine occurs. Your deltoid will release lactic acid, burn and if you hold it there long enough it will tremble as your arm struggles to maintain position. Try to last 5 seconds in this position, than 10 seconds up to maybe 30. This is not a workout. Same logic as the Plank.

The Value of This Philosophy

  • Exposing yourself to voluntary discomfort suggests you will gain improved motivation for personal growth. (2)

  • Voluntary discomfort increases your perception of achieving your stated goals. (3)

  • Research shows pain is partially an emotional experience, and voluntary discomfort better prepares you for the discomfort emotional pain will inevitably bring. (4)

Your 7 Day Hustle Challenge

  • Day 1 – 2: Randomly do a 90 degree arm motion. This should occur in an odd place. This can be at a bathroom, your office, while driving a car. The purpose is to unexpectedly do this action so your body and mind can better prepare for being blindsided.

  • Day 3 – 4. On a random moment while laying down in your bed before you drift off to sleep get up and do one plank. The point is to prepare your mind that in moments of expected rest you can be caught off guard by random events. This builds your willpower to be prepared when your mind expects rest.

  • Day 5 – 6. Cold Shower yourself in the mourning. The point is to anticipate a dreadful event and do it anyways. This gives your mind the opportunity to prepare for an inevitable event and demonstrate imagined consequences are typically worse than reality.

  • Day 7: Reflect: Did you find you were not triggered by things which normally upset you? Did you get news someone said would be bad but you didn’t take it bad? Did your spouse bring up an old wound which no longer upsets you?

The concept I teach in this article is free. Some of my personal stories are not free of charge as everything costs something. The techniques I discuss in this article I use. Will is something I draw upon every day. I use it in my relationships, my parenting, my legal challenges and even writing. It is important to remember that life is not about comfort. We are all destined to experience discomfort. Those who prepare for it voluntarily are less likely to be crushed by the involuntary discomfort we all inevitably experience. Don’t let it cost you your peace of mind let it cost you a few moments of time. These small voluntary moments add up to untold capacity to endure the unendurable.
